Top 10 Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movies of All Time
Deadpool 3 recently made headlines after becoming one of the top-grossing R-rated movies of all time. It’s common for a PG-13 movie to break the charts and earn over $1 Billion at the box office, but R-rated movies generally fail to make big bucks because of limiting their audience. But, every once in a while, we get a violent movie that not only makes some profits but also gets them filthy rich with astonishing returns. So, here are the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time:
10. The Passion of the Christ
- Release Date: February 25, 2004
- Budget: $30 million
- Box Office: $612.1 million
There may be several films or documentaries based around Christ, but The Passion of the Christ is the best one. Everything about this R-rated film, from the music to the cinematography and acting, is extraordinary.
The Roman Empire is shown as cruel as ever with Christ spreading the message of Love. The hardships that Christ goes through are difficult yet inspiring to watch, and the Crisification scene will definitely break your heart, making your eyes go watery. Yes, it’s that impactful.
It’s no wonder the movie was incredibly successful in terms of box office collection, earning more than $600 Million globally.
9. Logan
- Release Date: March 3, 2017
- Budget: $97–127 million
- Box Office: $619.2 million
Logan was supposed to be Hugh Jackman’s goodbye to Wolverine. We all know that didn’t happen, as the actor returned to play the character in Deadpool 3. However, that didn’t change the fact that Logan is and will always be a masterpiece.
The first R-rated Wolverine movie shattered box office records with its bloody action. Logan’s rough and rugged look was praised by the fandom, and the story, especially the ending, can never ever be forgotten by hardcore fans of the character.

8. Detective Chinatown 3
- Release Date: 12 February 2021
- Budget: $117 million
- Box Office: $686 million
Sitting at number #6 is Detective Chinatown 3, a comedy mystery film that makes you laugh for hours with its lighthearted comedy. The actors leave no stone unturned to make you grin with their goofy demeanors. It’s a film that you can watch with your entire family and have an extremely good time.
The story sometimes goes all over the place, but the chaos is intended. The movie doesn’t want you to make sense of everything; it lets you know that the film is a fantasy with over-the-top characters who do ridiculous things and never run out of energy.
7. It
- Release Date: September 8, 2017
- Budget: $35-40 million
- Box Office: $701.8 million
Based on the eponymous novel from 1986, IT is a horror film that was released in 2017. What makes a horror movie successful is the cast, the terrifying setting, and a hair-raising narrative. It is short of none of these.
In this film, we see a group of kids trying to fight a demonic clown. This movie is good enough to explain why most of us are afraid of clowns in our childhood, and that earned it a hair over $700 Million. However, it’s not just the horror elements that make it a good film; the emotional aspects featured in it also make it worthwhile.
6. The Matrix Reloaded
- Release Date: May 15, 2003
- Budget: $127-150 million
- Box Office: $741.8 million
Created by Lily Wachowski and Lana Wachowski, The Matrix Reloaded is a sequel to the original film that was released in 1999. It takes place six months after the events of the first film. The film couldn’t impress some fans, but it emerged as one of the top-grossing R-rated movies ever, thanks to the majority of cinephiles who showed interest in it.
The first film was pretty straightforward, and that’s why fans loved it. The second film made things complicated by trying to add more elements and characters. Despite disappointing some fans, the movie was a box-office hit because of the acting performances and the stable pacing.
5. Deadpool
- Release Date: February 12, 2016
- Budget: $58 million
- Box Office: $782.6 million
The first Deadpool movie arrived in 2016 and introduced us to a superhero who doesn’t seem like one. I mean, he has a personality like no other superhero. Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, leaves no chance to make you scream or laugh. It is a perfect blend of comedy and dark tone.
The film also showcases one of the most horrifying superheroic transformations. Wade Wilson, a handsome man, is tortured by some maniac and gets his body burned to become the foul-mouthed superhero Deadpool. The film gives us a glimpse of the titular character’s love story with Vanessa, but not for long.
4. Deadpool 2
- Release Date: May 18, 2018
- Budget: $110 billion
- Box Office: $785.8 billion
Deadpool 2 is a perfect sequel that every movie franchise deserves. It introduces fans to several potential comic book characters, such as Josh Brolin’s Cable, and we witness some amazing fight sequences. The special thing about this film is that it does not let us know who the real villain is for a long time.
For instance, for half of the film, you will see Cable as the main villain, but as the film progresses, you find out that Russell, the young Mutant, is the real villain. It’s one of the key reasons Deadpool 2 feels so intriguing and fresh. Furthermore, the film gives you several chances to laugh out loud with its humor, like the first film.
3. Oppenheimer
- Release Date: July 21, 2023
- Budget: $100 billion
- Box Office: $977 billion
No Christopher Nolan movie is bad, and Oppenheimer is an example of this. The filmmaker has blessed us with great films like the Batman trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and many more, but he hasn’t tackled a genre under which Oppenheimer falls before.
However, we now know that no matter the genre, Nolan’s experimentation with the films can never go wrong. His direction and Cillian Murphy’s acting made the film a spectacular experience. Despite being a 3-hour-long movie, Oppenheimer has everything to hook you on it from start to end. Check out other popular Cillian Murphy movies and TV shows right here.
2. Joker
- Release Date: October 4, 2019
- Budget: $55 billion
- Box Office: $1.079 billion
No one can raise questions about a movie that stars Joaquin Phoenix. In Joker, the actor portrays the mentally challenged human slash clown who becomes a proud criminal after facing all the trauma since childhood. Phoenix does not let us feel that we are seeing a fictional character on the screen (his acting was that good).
Besides him, the cinematography, the sound score, and the script contributed greatly to the film’s success. Before this film, we had always witnessed the madness of the Joker in Batman stories, but this was the first time that a standalone film about the most cunning opponent of the Caped Crusader created history.
Joker 2 will hit the big screens on October 4, 2024, and things will get even more dark this time. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed and see if the sequel will surpass the first movie in terms of popularity and box office collection.
